A Steady Heart with a Servant’s Spirit

When you meet Michelle, the first thing you’ll notice is her calm warmth, a quiet strength that speaks volumes long before she says a word. She’s not someone who seeks the spotlight, but her consistent, compassionate presence at Port Cares has made her a true light in our community.

Michelle began volunteering with Port Cares during a time when the world felt uncertain, but her heart was certain: she wanted to help. Since then, she’s become a familiar face in the resource center, showing up week after week with a humble spirit and a willingness to do whatever is needed, whether that’s sorting food, organizing supplies, or simply offering a kind word.

"For me, it’s not about the task, it’s about showing people they matter," Michelle shares. And that’s exactly what she does.

It’s the little things that make a big impact, a box of groceries packed with care, shelves tidied so clients can find what they need with dignity, a smile that reminds someone they’re not alone. Michelle brings intention and heart to it all.

One moment that stands out to her? A simple thank-you from a client who was moved not just by the support they received, but by how genuinely seen and respected they felt. "That reminded me why I do this," Michelle says. "It’s not just about food, it’s about hope."

When asked how volunteering has changed her, Michelle pauses,

“It’s opened my eyes. There’s more need than most people realize. But there’s also so much goodness when people come together to help.”

To Michelle, volunteering isn’t a grand gesture, it’s about showing up. Steadily, quietly, with love.

And to us at Port Cares, Michelle is more than a volunteer, she’s family. A beautiful example of what it means to serve with heart.

Thank you, Michelle, for all that you do. Your kindness doesn’t just fill shelves, it fills souls.
